Maine is a paradise for those who love spending time outdoors.

Our state offers some of the best hunting, hiking, fishing and boating in New England.

There’s a reason adventurers have visited Maine for hundreds of years.

Fishermen will tell you that Maine is a great place to go fishing. Hundreds of ponds, lakes and rivers dot the state. These bodies of water are full of trout, bass and salmon.

Although many of these fish barely reach the minimum length to be kept, some are truly massive.

What was the biggest fish ever caught in Maine?

We did some digging to determine the largest fish ever caught in Maine and were surprised not only at the size of the fish, but also when it was caught.

According to the A to Z Animals website, the largest fish caught in Maine was a lake trout that Erik Poland caught on July 2, 2020.

The fish, caught in Richardson Lake, weighed 39.2 pounds and measured 44 inches long.

The article explains that this monster was caught while trolling in about 90 feet of water. Poland reportedly used a DB smelt bait.

Of course, it is important to note that this was the largest fish caught inland. The fish brought back by fishermen offshore are much larger.
