A 39-year-old Lafayette man was caught stealing a truck by the truck’s owner last Tuesday.

According to a complaint affidavit filed by Macon County Sergeant Tyler Gann, the officer was dispatched to a residence on Coolidge Rd. on June 18, 2024, after a caller reported that a man had attempted to steal his truck .

The caller said he was able to get the man out of his truck and onto the ground.

When Sergeant Gann arrived on scene, another deputy was handcuffing the man and he was able to identify him as Anthony “AJ” Dyer.

While speaking with the owner of the vehicle, officers learned that he was inside his residence when they heard his truck start up and saw Mr. Dyer drive his truck out of the garage.

The owner further explained that he attempted to get Dyer to stop and when he refused, the owner shot at the vehicle.

At that point, Dyer lost control of the vehicle and struck a fence, damaging the truck and trapping it.

The owner was able to get Mr. Dyer out of the vehicle and hold him on the ground until law enforcement arrived.

Mr. Dyer told officers he was kidnapped from a residence on Chaffin Rd. and assaulted on John Lewis Creek, repeatedly changing the details of the alleged kidnapping and assault.

During the interview with Dyer, Sergeant Gann believed he was under the influence of some type of stimulant, and a field sobriety test was conducted.

The officer who conducted the test concluded, based on the evidence presented, that he also believed Dyer to be under the influence of a stimulant.

Dyer was placed under arrest for burglary, vandalism and theft of property. His bail was set at $50,000 and he is scheduled to appear in General Sessions Court on July 10, 2024.
