Jokowi shocked Kalimantan commodity prices similar to those in Java

TEMPO.CO, JakartaPresident Joko Widodo or Jokowi monitored commodity prices at the Mentaya Central Market in East Kotawaringin, Central Kalimantan, Wednesday, June 26. He didn’t expect that the prices of commodities on the island of Borneo would be relatively good.

“(The price of) shallots is Rp 40,000 per kg, garlic Rp 40,000, chicken meat Rp 38,000, the same as in Java. This is good,” he said in Bapeang village, as quoted in a written statement issued by the Presidential Secretariat.

Jokowi said the distribution of food from Java to Kalimantan was going smoothly, even though the goods came from Java. “I was surprised to see that the prices are almost the same (with Java),” he added.

According to data from the National Food Agency on Wednesday morning, June 26, food prices in Central Java are relatively lower than on Tuesday. For example, garlic costs Rp 36,760 per kilogram, shallots at Rp 36,520 per kilogram, chicken meat at Rp 36,070 per kilogram, and curly red peppers at Rp 37,570 per kilogram.

At the market, the president also handed over capital aid to several traders and spoke with people who thronged the market.

Jokowi left for Central Kalimantan on Wednesday morning. After visiting East Kotawaringin, the former Jakarta governor would continue to Katingan Regency and Palangkaraya City to inspect health facilities and rice stocks.
