THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: MP John Brittas has demanded a rollback of the increase in airfares. He wrote to Union Aviation Minister Kinjarappu Rammohan Naidu to point out the problem. The MP’s explanation is to point out that the Thiruvananthapuram airport operators are making extra profits by imposing excessive burden on passengers by adopting wrong methods. In this situation, John Brittas asked the minister to urgently intervene to review the order regarding the rate increase.

The Airport Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) has approved a 50 per cent increase in user fees at the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. Currently, the user fee is Rs 950 for international passengers and Rs 450 for domestic passengers. According to the new fare, domestic passengers will have to pay Rs 770 and international passengers will have to pay Rs 1,540 (excluding taxes). It appears that this figure is lower than the increase requested by the airport. But the Adani group, in charge of managing the airport, did not respond on this subject.

Meanwhile, Thiruvananthapuram International Airport achieved a record number of passengers in the first two months of this financial year. The airport was used by 4.44 lakh passengers, including domestic and international passengers. The target for the current financial year is 50 lakh passengers.

Meanwhile, the airport has received permission to undertake development works worth Rs 1,200 crore over the next five years. Major development projects include runway resurfacing, international terminal expansion, master plan preparation and construction of the new Air Traffic Control (ATC).
