House panels discuss strategies to address security threats from China and combat ‘unfair’ trade practices

The United States is stepping up efforts to counter potential security threats posed by Chinese technology, particularly in the automotive and semiconductor sectors. U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo has expressed concern about the idea of ​​a million Chinese cars collecting data from Americans and sending it back to Beijing. She stressed the need for aggressive measures, including potentially banning Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) from U.S. roads.

Raimondo also highlighted the national security risks of Chinese data ending up in the hands of the Chinese military. She mentioned that the Commerce Department is considering regulations that could require all data from vehicles made in China to be stored in the United States to prevent such data breaches.

In addition to concerns about connected vehicles, U.S. lawmakers are also looking at China’s dominance in industries like semiconductors, shipbuilding and drones. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi has called for restoring trade protections to counter China’s unfair trade practices, accusing it of flooding the U.S. market with heavily subsidized goods.

The House Select Committee on China has heard proposals from experts on how to level the playing field in key industries. Rep. Ro Khanna supported imposing dock fees on Chinese-made ships to counter China’s unfair subsidies in the sector. At the same time, author Christopher Miller highlighted the need for additional safeguards to prevent critical technologies such as semiconductors from falling into Chinese hands.

The United States is taking a strong stance against China’s technological dominance, with a focus on protecting national security and ensuring fair competition in the global market. The government is exploring various strategies to address the challenges posed by China’s economic and technological prowess.
