Message from the President: June 2024 | Department of Family Medicine

To begin this month’s message, I am pleased to share with you two key positions we have filled within the Ministry: Machelle Wilchesky will assume the role of Co-Scientific Director of the Practice-Based Research Network (PBRN) effective July 1, replacing Jeannie Haggerty who has held this role for many years. Professor Wilchesky will work with Laura MacLaren, Co-Clinical Director. We also welcome Professor Wilchesky and thank Professor Haggerty for her tremendous service.

Kathleen Rice will assume the role of research director from September 1, replacing Isabelle Vedel who has been acting research director since May 1. We look forward to working with Professor Rice and thank Dr. Vedel for his willingness to step forward to bridge the 4-month gap between research supervisors.

The past month was once again filled with extraordinary events, celebrating our discipline and celebrating individuals who stand out in the Department of Family Medicine.

Late last month, several of our graduate students received their doctorate and master’s degrees. Congratulations to all! On the last day of May, we were treated to excellent presentations of resident academic activities at the Tannenbaum Resident Research Day. That afternoon, I had the pleasure of attending the graduation ceremony for our second year residents, where I was able to witness the enthusiasm of the young, freshly trained doctors who are beginning their medical careers. of family.

On June 6, we held a community event in the Indigenous space to announce the release of the report on Cultural safety in the context of indigenous health research, to which members of our Department have contributed. The event was well attended and received considerable media coverage.

Later in the afternoon, Mylène Arsenault was named to the Honor Roll for Excellence in Education during a ceremony at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Congratulations Mylène, this honor is very well deserved!

On June 14, two of the Department’s major research teams, the Family Medicine Education Research Group (FMER) and participatory research at McGill (PRAM) joined forces to organize a Round table on committed adolescent medicine, at the Thomson House. All four panelists presented fascinating work and apparently more such events will take place in the next academic year!

Later in the day, the Collège Québécois des Médecins de Famille held its annual awards ceremony during which I had the pleasure of seeing three members of our Department win major awards: Maureen Doyle was named Family Physician of the Year, in recognition of her long career and contributions to many aspects of family medicine; Marc Karanofsky won an Award of Excellence for his contribution to community and hospital life-FMG-U; and Hélène Rousseau won the Andrée Gagnon Prize for the defense of perinatal care. A huge congratulations to all three of you! To top it all, Geneviève Boiswho completed his residency at St. Mary’s about ten years ago, was sworn in as the new president of the CQMF!

The newsletter will be on vacation in July, so I will see you again in August!

Very warmly as always,

Marion
