Love is a cursed incantation on Giant Julie’s creeping “In My Room” – Beats Per Minute

Under the nickname Giant Julie, songwriter and producer Yulya Divakova writes experimental pop music that is as enchanting as it is disturbing. Especially when you listen to “In My Room,” which describes love not as a thrilling, dizzy feeling, but as a kind of horror creature hiding under the bed, keeping you up all night. Perhaps this is why Divakova chose to depict love in the form of Cerebrus, the three-headed hellhound, for the artwork: in this particular piece, one cannot never go out.

“In My Room” moves at an eerie snail’s pace, using sub-bass synths as a suspenseful undercurrent, while large string flourishes jump fear in and out of frame. It’s Divakova’s raw, incisive vocal delivery, however, that maintains the music’s center of gravity, creating a captivating tension that never really lets up.

Giant Julie: “When I was writing this song, I got interested in Grimes, SOPHIE and serpentwithfeet, for example, and had the courage to make glitchy drum sounds and use the sub as bass. Frank Ocean’s music inspired me to make my voice more naked, more exposed in the song, and to use it almost like a percussion instrument by being precise on the beginning and end of the words.

“In My Room” is available now via Dutch brand AT EASE. Listen to the song below.
