Redwood Swap Rezoning Plans Move Forward

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — The West Valley City Planning Commission is moving forward with plans to rezone land used for the Redwood Drive-in Theatre and Swap Meet for new apartments.

More than 100 residents came to express their opinion to save the exchange meeting during the municipal meeting on Wednesday evening. However, the commission voted 4-2 in favor of moving forward.

Attorney Orlando Luna has an office two blocks from the drive-in and represents many vendors who depend on the thousands of weekly visitors to survive.

“About 70,000 people come every week to spend their weekend participating in a swap meet. It is very important for them because it can reach about 700 families or owners who participate in the swap meet by selling their products,” he said.

More people voiced their concerns during public comment.

“There were telephone documents of about 60 pages with all the comments made by the community. I would say probably 99% of the comments were against it,” Luna said.

Luna said there is still hope since the final say is now in the hands of the West Valley City Council.

So far, vendors have collected more than 20,000 signatures to stop the Redwood Drive-in Theatre and Swap Meet from implementing the rezoning plans.
