Update: Missing person found during search of Wareham rest area

Several police helicopters circled Wareham on the morning of Thursday, June 27, as the I-195 rest area between exits 35 and 39 swarmed with first responders searching for a missing person.

“The search area included woods, beaches and waterways,” according to Massachusetts State Police.

Emergency personnel blocked the I-195 Wareham boat ramp during their search. The I-195 Wareham boat ramp provides access to the Weweantic River.

“It appears the missing person was located and the scene cleared shortly after 1 p.m.,” Massachusetts State Police reported.

Around 1:32 p.m., chatter on the Wareham Fire Department’s radio scanner indicated that first responders were “just coming out of the water.”

The identity of the missing person is unknown at this time.

First responders on scene included Wareham police officers, Wareham firefighters, Marion firefighters and Massachusetts State Police. State police helicopters, K9 units and marine units also responded, according to state police.

Police and firefighters at the rest area declined to comment on their activities.

As of 5 p.m. Thursday, June 27, the Wareham Police Department declined to comment and referred questions to the Massachusetts State Police. The Wareham Fire Department also declined to comment.
