GODDARD, Kan. (KSNW) — The Tanganyika Wildlife Park announced the birth of Grevy’s zebra foal on Facebook on Thursday.

“We are delighted to announce the birth of a magnificent Grevy’s Zebra!” said Tanganyika. “Born 9 days ago, this precious addition marks an important milestone in our conservation efforts and the preservation of this endangered species.”

Grevy’s zebras are the largest and most endangered of the three zebra species, with fewer than 3,000 individuals remaining in the wild, according to Tanganyika. They are native to northern Kenya and southern Ethiopia and are known for their distinctive narrow stripes and large, rounded ears.

The mother and her foal are closely monitored by zookeepers.

“The foal is already showing signs of good health, he remains close to his mother and is breastfeeding,” Tanganyika said.

You can see the mother and her foal in the far east of the park. Tanganyika is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily during the summer season. It is open until 8 p.m. on wild Wednesdays.
