Weekend Picks – June 28

Mosaic lessons

The Lower Mills Branch of the Boston Public Library is hosting a six-part workshop series on how to create your own original mosaic sculpture for a table or garden from household materials. The workshop series begins this Friday from 10-11:30 a.m., where participants will learn how to sculpt and create a mosaic with glass and ceramic tiles, and finish with grout to secure their creation. The events are free but registration is required.

Free walking group

Lace up your sneakers and get ready to get your steps in at this free walking fitness class led by Brandy of Just Walk Boston. The group will meet outside the Franklin Park Golf Clubhouse in Dorchester on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. for a walking workout designed to invigorate the body and mind. The program is part of the Boston Parks Summer Fitness series, which offers free workouts in Boston parks that are open to all fitness levels.

Pop-up Bike Repair

Is your bike in need of some TLC? Bikes Not Bombs is bringing its Chain Reaction mobile bike repair service back to the Dorchester Food Coop this Saturday from 11am-1pm. Qualified staff and young apprentices will be on hand to offer free bike checks focusing on the basics: ensuring the bike is airtight, the brakes and the chain are all correctly adjusted. Full tune-ups are not offered on-site, but the free tune-ups include professional advice and quotes for more extensive repairs.

Candle Making Class

Come to Boston Harbor Distillery for a fun and creative afternoon of candle making on Saturday from 2:30-4:00 p.m., where guests will learn how to make their own custom soy candles from Salt and Branch. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned professional, this event is perfect for anyone looking to unleash their creativity. Tickets are $45 per person and all candles are made entirely from natural soy wax and use phthalate-free fragrance oils.

PorchFest Quincy

The annual PorchFest Quincy event is back for an 8th year and features over 100 different bands playing music on porches throughout the Merrymount, Squantum and Wollaston neighborhoods. The free festival, which takes place Saturdays from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., celebrates local artists and fosters a sense of community through the shared experience of music. Local food vendors will also be present, as well as beer and wine sales in designated areas.
