My mistake at AFCON 2021 still hurts me – Maduka Okoye

Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has admitted he is still angered by the disappointment that followed his blunder which caused the Super Eagles’ premature ouster from the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon.

Against Tunisia in the round of 16, Okoye misjudged the rebound of a shot from outside the box and it would be the goal that eliminated the Super Eagles.

Two years later, Okoye says he has yet to overcome the disappointment he caused an entire country.

“At that moment, I thought I should have done better. To be honest, it still hurts me today,” the goalkeeper said in a YouTube interview with Oma Akatugba.

“You could see it was a mistake because I had to keep the ball out of the goal. If I want to play for Inter Milan, I have to do better in situations like this.

“I’m not just talking about what I’ve read on social media, it’s more about the feeling of letting down your teammates, your family and your country.

“People will always say something bad about you. I know I didn’t make the right choice in this situation, and I know I let my teammates and my country down in this situation.

“And I’m still unhappy and sad about it to this day, and I wish I could have done it differently, but it happened and I learned from my mistake. »

Okoye has since been recalled to the Super Eagles.
