Evangelical Community Hospital Announces Emergency Medical Services Provider of the Year | News, sports, jobs

LEWISBURG — Ashley Houtz, Advanced EMT, Evangelical Regional Mobile Medical Services (ERMMS), recently received the EMS Provider of the Year award through Geisinger Medical Center.

Emergency medical services (EMS) providers and their fellow first responders were recently recognized for their service to their community at Geisinger’s EMS Provider of the Year Awards reception, held just before a Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders home game at PNC Field in Moosic in June.

Houtz was nominated for this award by another emergency medical provider for her quick action, critical thinking and application of emergency medicine skills during a car accident in April. The accident included entrapment and the Advanced Life Support system was not readily available due to poor weather conditions. Houtz relied on her recently acquired skills as an advanced paramedic to assess conditions and perform life-saving interventions while crews extracted the patient from the vehicle and transported him to Geisinger for trauma treatment.

Houtz began working with ERMMS as an EMT in October 2021 and earned her Advanced Medical Technician certification in 2023. She continues to provide lifesaving services in her role as an Advanced EMT at ERMMS.

ERMMS is the affiliate of Evangelical Community Hospital that provides emergency response services to surrounding communities. Since its inception in 2019, ERMMS has added the ability to hire and provide advanced paramedics to the region and has established an EMT training program in the region through a collaborative effort with the Pennsylvania College of Technology and for high school students, with the SUN Area Technical Institute.
