Swiss star relishes Euro 2024 clash with Italy: ‘Happy to meet my Inter Milan teammates’

Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer is looking forward to today’s Euro 2024 clash against Italy against his Inter Milan teammates.

The 35-year-old remains a pillar of his national team at the age of 35. He has also established himself as the Nerazzurri’s number one between the sticks after leaving Bayern Munich last summer.

The goalkeeper helped his country secure second place in Group A, just behind Germany. That set them up for a meeting with the Azzurri, who also finished second in their group, but in more dramatic fashion.

Sommer will therefore defend the Swiss goal against the reigning European champions. This highly anticipated tilt will be the opening match of the round of 16.

It will be a special moment for the former FC Basel player who will face his club teammates, including Nicolo Barella, Alessandro Bastoni and Matteo Darmian.

The Nerazzurri goalkeeper expressed his enthusiasm at the idea.

“During the tournament I spoke with my Inter teammates,” the Swiss international said in his pre-match press conference via FcInterNews.

“Each of us will fight for our nation, but I am happy to meet them.

“I don’t know how many stops I will have to make. But a defensive performance to the best of our abilities will be necessary to advance. »

Sommer also spoke about the personnel change within Inter’s goalkeeping department.

The club has chosen not to keep Emil Audero on a permanent basis, while Genoa Joseph Martinez will soon sign for the Nerazzurri.

“I saw that we no longer had Emil Audero, so we needed a new goalkeeper, and rightly so.

“Now I’m only focused on the European Championship and I’ll think about Inter once the tournament is over.”
