Two Tulsa police officers shot during traffic stop in June 2020

Four years ago today, two officers were both shot multiple times during a traffic stop near the intersection of 21st Street and 89th Avenue East.

The officers were Sgt. Craig Johnson, a 15-year veteran of the Tulsa Police Department, and a rookie cop he supervised, Aurash Zarkeshan.

The next dayJohnson, 45, died of gunshot wounds he suffered in the line of duty.

Officer Zarkeshan returned to light duty with the Tulsa Police Department in November 2020Doctors expect him to make a full recovery, he said.

Jurors found Matthew Hall guilty of two counts of aiding and abetting a felony — shooting with intent to kill — for helping David Ware after Ware shot at the officers. A Tulsa County judge sentenced to 24 years in prison against Hall in March 2021. Ware was found guilty by a jury in April 2022 and a judge ordered the death penalty next month.
