Delhi airport T1 roof collapse: Govt orders airlines to avoid hike in ticket prices as over 80 flights canceled

Delhi Airport Terminal 1 Roof Collapse: The Ministry of Civil Aviation has issued an advisory asking airlines to avoid increasing their ticket prices after the roof collapse incident at the Delhi Airport. Terminal 1 of Delhi Airport on Friday June 28.

At Delhi airport, flight operations are being shifted to Terminals 2 and 3 after Terminal 1 was closed for take-offs and landings. The government’s advisory is aimed at curbing any unexpected hike in airfares to and from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, it has been reported CNBC-TV18 citing well-informed officials.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation said in a message posted on X, formerly Twitter: “In light of the unfortunate incident at T1D IGIA Terminal, Delhi, airlines are advised to monitor airfares to and from Delhi and take appropriate action if required.”

Part of the roof of Delhi Airport’s Terminal 1 collapsed around 5 am on Friday. The incident left one person dead and at least six injured among those present at the scene. Following this incident, domestic flights like Indigo and SpiceJet operating from Terminal 1 of the airport were canceled and temporarily rescheduled to operate from Terminals 2 and 3 in Delhi.

mint According to information collected on the official website of Delhi Airport, Indigo has canceled more than 80 flights and SpiceJet around 15 flights. The airport typically handles around 190 to 200 arrivals and departures per day. The airport has a capacity to handle 40 million passengers per year and operates 4,56,183 flights for the year 2023-24.

Heavy rains led to the collapse of part of the roof of Terminal 1 of Delhi airport, PTI reported quoting the ministry.

Reuters reported on Friday, citing the National Weather Office, that the Delhi airport area received about 148.5 millimeters (5.85 inches) of rain over three hours, more than the average rainfall for June 2024. Safdarjung weather station recorded 228.1 mm (9 inches) of rainfall in 24 hours, the highest rainfall ever recorded in a single day in June in 88 years.

“Furthermore, cancellations and rescheduling of flights due to the incident can be carried out without criminal prosecution,” the Civil Aviation Ministry said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
