Riverbanks Zoo and Garden announces death of giraffe Charlie

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – The Riverbanks Zoo and Garden announced the death of one of its giraffes, Charlie.

Zoo officials said Charlie died last week after ongoing health problems and a declining response to treatment.

Charlie was the father of seven calves and the grandfather of several others.

Zoo officials said Charlie enriched the lives of his keepers and inspired visitors to care about wildlife conservation. They said that at the giraffe feeding platform, Charlie enchanted visitors with his grace, charm and love of lettuce.

Charlie has been described as a “wonderful ambassador for his species.”

“Charlie will be greatly missed by the staff and guests of Riverbanks. Our hearts go out to the Animal Care staff during this difficult time,” the zoo said in a Facebook post.

In March, the zoo also announced the death of another giraffe, Isabelle, who died at the age of 13.
