By Asif Aydinli

The authorities of the Republic of Congo have offered Lukoil to participate in new oil and gas projects, both offshore and onshore. According to News.Az, citing neftegaz.ru, the prospects for expanding cooperation in the energy sector were discussed at a meeting with Lukoil representatives.

Lukoil is already present in Congo and this proposal aims to strengthen existing relations. Congolese authorities have highlighted the country’s attractiveness for investments in the oil and gas sector, noting its rich resources and favorable investment climate.

Lukoil representatives expressed interest in new opportunities, emphasizing the importance of Congo as a long-term partner. Lukoil Vice President for International Business Development said the company is considering various possibilities to expand its presence in Africa.

Russia is actively exploring the African continent, seeking to strengthen its position in the region. Africa is rich in natural resources and many countries offer favorable investment conditions. For Russia, this represents significant economic and geopolitical advantages.

Economic benefits include access to resources such as oil, gas, precious metals and rare earths, which will allow Russia to diversify its sources of raw materials and strengthen its energy security. Participation in African projects allows Russian companies to access new markets, promoting export growth and strengthening economic ties. Investments in the extraction and processing of raw materials in Africa can generate significant revenues for Russian companies, contributing to job creation and infrastructure development.

Geopolitical benefits include strengthening Russia’s influence in the international arena, allowing it to play an important role in solving global problems and strengthening bilateral relations with African countries. Cooperation with African countries allows Russia to diversify its international relations and reduce its dependence on its traditional partners. Economic and technical cooperation with African countries also strengthens ties with allies and partners, which can be beneficial in the context of international politics and economic competition.

It is worth noting that China is also actively exploring African markets, investing in various economic sectors, including infrastructure, energy and mining. Chinese companies are actively involved in the construction of roads, ports, power plants and other facilities, thereby contributing to the economic growth of African countries and strengthening China-Africa ties.

If Congo’s proposal is accepted, it will allow Lukoil to increase its hydrocarbon production and strengthen its position in the region, which will contribute to the development of the Congolese energy sector and increase the country’s income. For Russia, this will be another step towards strengthening its influence and its economic presence in Africa, in a context of competition with other global players such as China.
