Mamma mia! Italians are known for getting irritable when the British tweak their classic dishes – and covering your pasta in ketchup is top of the list of things not to do.

According to a poll, 78 percent of Italians called it the worst culinary horror, followed by pineapple on pizza (67 percent).

The survey found there were huge differences in how each country cooked and ate pasta, pizza and other staples, with Italians calling our efforts an “abomination”.

Pineapple on pizza came in second on the list, while serving the dish with garlic bread also annoyed 18% of respondents.

Throwing pasta against the wall to see if it sticks and is cooked (53 percent) and putting cream in a carbonara sauce (49 percent) also make the top ten.

Serving garlic bread with pizza caused the least offense, but still annoyed 18 percent of Italians.

The study was carried out by the Italian food company Napolina.
