Flight cancellations mount as WestJet mechanics take to the picket lines

On one of Canada’s busiest long weekends, thousands of travellers are stranded by a WestJet mechanics strike. The airline has cancelled at least 235 flights, affecting thousands of people. This turn of events is surprising because the Canadian federal government had imposed binding arbitration in an attempt to stop the work stoppage. WestJet says the union abandoned a deal that would have made its maintenance engineers the highest paid in Canada. Now the government is stepping in and meeting with both sides to find a solution.
