“Things were unfair, but I knew there would be a time when I could shine” – Hardik Pandya

Called in late in the match as South Africa closed in on victory, Pandya bowled two crucial overs. He crucially dismissed Heinrich Klaasen, who was threatening with a rapid 52 off 27 balls, conceding just four runs to keep India in the hunt.

In the final over, defending 16 runs, Pandya conceded just eight runs and took two wickets, sealing India’s victory by seven runs and their second T20 World Cup title. Pandya’s figures of 3/20 in three overs played a decisive role in India’s triumph, showcasing his all-round abilities under pressure.

Amid the jubilant celebrations, Hardik spoke to Star Sports, reflecting on his journey from a disappointing IPL 2024 campaign to this victorious moment.

“It was very emotional, something was wrong but it was something the whole nation wanted. It was special for me after my six months, I didn’t say a word, things were unfair but I knew there would be a time when I could shine. An opportunity like this makes it all the more special,” Hardik Pandya said.

He added :

“We always believed, stayed calm, let the pressure come on them. Lately, I knew I had to execute my plans. All of a sudden my swing speed increases. I’ve been in that situation, I enjoy the pressure situation.

Hardik Pandya has taken charge of the Mumbai Indians (MI) club for the 2024 IPL season, replacing Rohit Sharma. However, he had to face rivals among the fans at most stadiums due to his poor performances, which led to the team finishing at the bottom of the points table.

Hardik Pandya bounced back impressively from his disappointing IPL 2024 campaign at the recently concluded T20 World Cup.

As a finisher with the bat, he scored 144 runs in eight matches at an average of 48 and a strike rate of 151.57. His bowling also contributed significantly to the balance of the Indian team, complementing three spinners in the starting XI.

Hardik took 11 wickets at an exceptional average of 17.36 and an economy rate of 7.64. Although he left India’s 2023 ODI World Cup campaign midway due to injuries, his all-round contributions played a crucial role in ending India’s 11-year ICC title drought.
