Reason for Fury vs Usyk fight canceled as fitness news emerges

Tyson Fury has given an update on his health ahead of his undisputed heavyweight fight against Oleksandr Usyk on Saturday. The WBC heavyweight titleholder had to pull out of his scheduled fight earlier this year due to a cut sustained during sparring, meaning the bout was cancelled.

The long-awaited showdown between Fury and Usyk, originally scheduled for Saturday, February 17 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, has been postponed to Saturday, May 18. This confrontation promises to be historic, as it will be the first time since Lennox Lewis triumphed over Evander Holyfield in 1999, the boxing world will see an undisputed heavyweight champion.

As the new fight date approaches, Fury took to Instagram to show off his fighting form. He posted a shirtless photo of himself flexing his muscles, accompanied by the caption: “Undisputed entrant (100 emoji and green tick emoji) 18/5/24.”

The post quickly caught the attention of fans, garnering over 100,000 likes and nearly 2,000 comments in just six hours. Notably, there were no visible marks or swelling around his right eye, which had been injured during training earlier in the year.

Tyson’s wife Paris Fury expressed her distress over the initial delay of the fight. She shared on her Instagram Story: “My whole body was shaking with nervousness when he showed me that cut, because I wasn’t there with him. He looked so f***ed up and disappointed but it’s boxing (a dangerous sport) and these things can happen,” the Manchester Evening News reported.

In a conversation with Queensberry Promotions, Fury praised Usyk, as reported by the Mirror: “Oleksandr Usyk is a very bad man and to underestimate Usyk, you’d be a mug,” he remarked.

“So I train hard for him, I do everything I can. I respect Usyk as a man. »

He continued to praise Usyk’s achievements, saying: “I respect his career as well – Olympic champion, undisputed cruiserweight champion, unified heavyweight champion. You have to respect that, I’m fighting the real deal. I have looking forward to the challenge.”

Fury also commented on Usyk’s technical prowess: “He’s a southpaw, he’s got good footwork, good boxing ability, technically sound. He’s proven he can mix it with the big heavyweights because he’s beaten Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois.”

The Gypsy King further acknowledged the mental aspect of their upcoming fight: “I’m playing an elite fighter who has more than just boxing ability. He’s stubborn and he wants to win like me. All the talents and attributes aside, it’s going to be whoever wants it the most that night.”

He added a personal note about determination: “If he wants it more than he wants it, he will win and if I want it more than him, then I will win.” I just think my will and determination will be stronger than his that night. »

With a fight scheduled for later this month, Fury is aware of the historic significance of a victory: “To win them all back would be fantastic. To bring them all together under one banner for the first time in 25 years…”

“Since then, there have been a few heavyweight champions who haven’t been able to secure an undisputed title. It’s a very special moment, especially for heavyweight boxing, to have all the belts on the line and two undefeated champions. »
