Brooklyn Nets silent on first day of free agency

It was the fourth anniversary of the “Clean Sweep,” that once-in-a-lifetime moment when the Nets brought in Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and DeAndre Jordan to free-agent deals that everyone thought would lead Brooklyn to win after win, title after title. But that wasn’t to be, and earlier this week, ownership and management finally put an end to that dream, unceremoniously going into tanking mode.

So on the first Sunday of free agency, the Nets were nowhere to be found. While small and large contracts were generated around the league, the most significant being Paul George’s move from Los Angeles to Philadelphia, where Tyrese Maxey also signed. Two $200 million deals securing the 76ers the next “Big Three.” Good luck with that!

The only noise circulating on Twitter was a rumor that Trendon Watford, who received a qualifying offer on Saturday, would soon sign a contract, likely above the veteran minimum required. But there has been no confirmation of that and no official word on the fate of the team’s other free agents, Lonnie Walker IV and Dennis Smith Jr. Nic Claxton had agreed to a four-year, $100 million contract, but it was planned.

The only other deal in the works was for Cam Johnson who is reportedly being traded in hopes of getting more draft assets and more space under the salary cap as it approaches next summer.

Hoopshype’s Mike Scotto had the most detailed offer, but he also suggested that nothing was close and that the teams mentioned also had their eyes on the league’s free agents.

Brooklyn Nets forward Cam Johnson has recently received trade interest from several teams, including the Toronto Raptors and Sacramento Kings, league sources told HoopsHype. The Indiana Pacers and Orlando Magic have also registered exploratory trade interest in Johnson, league sources told HoopsHype. However, Indiana had other pieces coming up in its pecking order, including agreeing to a four-year, $60 million deal with restricted free agent Obi Toppin, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, and Orlando will pursue several free agents with their cap space, like Kentavious. Caldwell-Pope and Isaiah Hartenstein before considering acquiring a player and absorbing him into their cap space. According to a report from Chris Fedor, the Cleveland Cavaliers may also be interested in Johnson. However, nothing has come to fruition on that front so far, HoopsHype has learned.

The Post’s Brian Lewis also suggested the Nets’ potential interest in Tyus Jones, a free agent point guard who had his best season as a pro last year — averaging a dozen points and 7.3 assists last season for Washington. Of course, he’s not making a big splash, and it wouldn’t seem like the Nets would have much interest in him anyway.

There is also no news on the possible transfers of Bojan Bogdanvic, Dennis Schroder and Dorian Finney-Smith. All of these elements are mentioned in the context of the Nets’ reconstruction.

Additionally, there’s nothing new about making the Mikal Bridges trade to the Knicks official, although Bobby Marks thinks nothing will happen for another week. He expects the Knicks to eventually add a player to get them out of the tough cap from the first apron. Whether the player comes from the New York squad or comes as part of an exchange. Either way, Sean Marks has the power. He will have to approve any important exchange.
