New York Jets: Jets should use more play action and pre-snap moves

One of the complaints fans had last season about the New York Jets offense was the general lack of movement before the snap.

At the time, I thought that a lot of these complaints were likely due to the general incompetence of the New York Jets offense and that fans were simply focusing on one aspect to assign blame. However, a recent statistical analysis I saw on X provides some support that the lack of pre-snap movement may have been an issue. Specifically, the analysis was provided by Jacob Gibbs (@JAGibbs_23 on X), who writes for Fantasy Football Today.

As noted here, passing plays that utilize both pre-snap motion and play action perform better than plays that utilize neither or only one aspect. Using both yields an expected points added per play of 0.13, which is a pretty strong number; for those who prefer more traditional stats, the passer rating is 103.8, which is also pretty strong.

So while the lack of movement may not have been the only cause of frustration for the New York Jets offense, it appears that its use may have helped at least a little bit. For the 2024 team, this gives reason to consider using more of these wrinkles to maximize passing efficiency.
