A report of people in distress triggered searches at a rest area on Thursday

On Thursday, June 27, first responders gathered at the I-195 rest area between exits 35 and 39, searching for a missing person.

The Wareham Fire Department reported the search was prompted by a report of people possibly in distress in the water.

According to the Wareham Fire Department, “one person whose initial report triggered a response was transported to the hospital; however, no other victims have been located.

“It appears the missing person was located and the scene cleared shortly after 1 p.m.,” Massachusetts State Police reported.

The identity of the formerly missing person is still unknown at this point.

More than 20 Wareham firefighters, under the command of Chief John Kelley, began searching the area by boat and land, and were later joined by other public safety agencies. First responders on scene included Wareham Police Officers, Wareham Fire Department, Marion Fire Department and Massachusetts State Police. State police helicopters, K9 units and marine units also responded, according to state police.

“The search area included woods, beaches and waterways,” according to Massachusetts State Police.

Wareham fire units on scene included Chief Kelley, Deputy Chiefs Haskell and Rogers, as well as Marine 1, Special Operations 1, Squad 2, Rescue 1 and Engine 5. A Marion Engine assisted at the scene while that the Onset Fire Department provided an engine for the cover of Station 1. The Massachusetts Fire Department was requested and sent two pieces of equipment. Additionally, multiple police agencies and Wareham EMS were on scene.
