Athletic Club sends strong message on Nico Williams amid Barcelona transfer talk

Athletic Club have sent a message over Nico Williams’ future after the young striker impressed again at Euro 2024 on Sunday.

The striker scored in an impressive performance against Georgia, helping Spain book their place in the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Williams is heavily linked with a move to Barcelona and is said to be the club’s top target for the summer transfer window.

However, Athletic were quick to highlight a gesture he made after the match, posting a video on X of Williams handing his Spain shirt to an Athletic fan after the match.

Nico makes a point of ensuring his shirt goes to a supporter in the crowd wearing an Athletic shirt and the club added the caption: “Nico Williams is well aware that he belongs.”

Williams signed a contract extension with the club in December, which runs until 2027, but that was not enough to quell speculation over his future.

Barcelona continue to be linked with a move despite the club’s financial problems, but he could well win more admirers if he continues to impress in Germany at Euro 2024.
