Whitefish Bay sinkhole: Village council to meet to discuss costs, repairs

WHITEFISH BAY, WisconsinThe Whitefish Bay Village Board of Trustees will meet Monday, July 1, to discuss long-term solutions for a sinkhole that has opened in a Whitefish Bay park.

They will then have a better idea of how long the park will remain closed and how much repairs will cost.

Last June, a 30-foot sinkhole opened up at Big Bay Park/Buckley Park. The problem goes much deeper than that.

“We found out it was due to a collapsed storm sewer in that neighborhood,” Public Works Director Matt Collins said.

The village has since declared a state of emergency.

The hole was filled and construction crews moved in, installing more than 500 feet of pipe, connecting the site of the collapse with storm water flowing into Lake Michigan.

The solution is only temporary. Teams still need to go about 70 feet underground to fix the real problem.

The village is asking people to stay away from the park while they work on a permanent repair so it can finally reopen.
