Milwaukee Brewers designate young infielder for assignment to make room for Garrett Mitchell

The Milwaukee Brewers are coming off a thrilling series win over the Chicago Cubs. Their last victory came Sunday, a 7-1 victory that featured Brince Turang hitting the team’s fifth grand slam in its last eight games. Milwaukee is now 50-34 on the season and six and a half games ahead of the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Central. The Pittsburgh Pirates are nine games back, the Cincinnati Reds are 11 games back and the Craig Counsell-led Chicago Cubs are in last place at 11.5 games back.

As a bonus, the Brewers announced that outfielder Garrett Mitchell will finally join the major league team on the road in Colorado to begin their road trip. The young outfielder had been sidelined all season with a finger injury he suffered during batting practice in spring training.

As fans may recall, Mitchell made a splash when he was first called up to the big leagues in late 2022. In his first 28 major league games, he hit .311/.373/.459 with two home runs, nine RBIs and eight stolen bases. He used that performance to earn a spot on Milwaukee’s Opening Day roster in 2023.

Unfortunately, Mitchell only played in 19 games last season due to a separated shoulder he suffered sliding to third base early in the season. He hit just .246/.315/.446 with three homers and seven RBIs during that span. Despite his late-season return, then-manager Craig Counsell left him off the Brewers’ playoff roster.

Mitchell arrived at spring training with every intention of never being left out again. He got off to a hot start, hitting well over .300 when he suffered another freak injury. While taking batting practice, he hit a ball against his finger, resulting in a fracture that required surgery.

A few weeks ago, Mitchell began his rehab in Milwaukee’s minor league system. In 14 games, he hit .314/.410/.588 with four homers and 13 RBIs.

Milwaukee Brewers designate Owen Miller for assignment

Unfortunately, Mitchell’s addition to the Major League roster meant that someone on the team would have to be released or designated for assignment. Earlier in the day, the club announced that Mequon, Wisconsin native Owen Miller was being designated for assignment to make room for Mitchell.

In 14 games with the Brewers so far this season, Miller is hitting just .185/.185/.222 with three RBIs. Of course, he hasn’t gotten much playing time either.

With Mitchell on the roster, the Brewers now have a very crowded outfield that includes Christian Yelich, Blake Perkins, Jackson Chourio and Sal Frelick. Jake Bauers also played in the outfield for Milwaukee this season.

It will be interesting to see how manager Pat Murphy balances his immense outfield talent going forward. Yelich will be an All-Star this year and is guaranteed to play every day (even if he’ll sometimes be the designated hitter). Perkins is perhaps the best defensive outfielder in baseball, and Chourio had a torrid June.

Finding drummers for everyone will definitely be a challenge.
