Normani Kordei ‘devastated’ by injury and performance cancellation

A former “Dancing with the Stars” contestant had a big performance planned that she had to cancel at the last minute. Former Fifth Harmony singer and DWTS season 24 runner-up Normani Kordei was scheduled to perform at the BET Awards on June 30. Instead, she found herself struggling with an injury.

“I am devastated and I hate to feel like a disappointment to you, but I need to focus on my healing right now,” Kordei explained.

Here’s what you need to know:

Normani Kordei injured during rehearsals for BET Awards

On June 30, Kordei shared the news in an Instagram Story. “I’m more frustrated and disappointed than anyone knows,” the “Dancing with the Stars” alum explained.

“I wanted to come on here and give you an update to let you know that while rehearsing for BET I had a very bad accident and injured myself,” she shared.

Kordei continued: “I am normally able to hold up under any circumstances, but unfortunately, due to my doctor’s orders, I am simply not able to perform this way.”

The former Fifth Harmony singer also said, “I desperately wanted to give you my best on that stage, but performing would delay my healing.” Additionally, Kordei noted that she struggled to “make sense of my feelings about it.”

In a second Instagram story, Kordei shared a photo showing her with her knee bandaged, a boot on her foot and crutches that she used to walk.

According to Us Weekly, Kordei’s message announcing his withdrawal from the show arrived just 30 minutes before the awards ceremony began.

Fans were disappointed to learn of Kordei’s injury

The singer’s fans expressed their disappointment and support online following her announcement.

“She’s unlucky. Every time she looks like she’s going to explode, the universe throws Legos at her feet,” one fan posted on the Pop Culture Chat subreddit.

“This is horrible! I hope she recovers. I would rather she miss a show than dance the whole show and have a permanent injury,” another fan added.

One Reddit user commented on the Pop Heads subreddit: “I feel bad for her. It’s just not her year. I hope she doesn’t get too discouraged. I think she’s very talented and I loved her album.”

“It’s such a shame and I wish her a speedy recovery. I was looking forward to seeing her. She’ll have a chance to smile soon. And I mean very soon. She’s been through a lot and it only prepares you for greatness,” another Redditor suggested.

“The devil is working overtime. Too bad. She will bounce back,” read a tweet from X (formerly Twitter).

On May 31, Kordei spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the release of his debut solo album, “Dopamine.” Fans have been eager for the album’s release since its first single, “Motivation,” dropped in 2019.

She has released several other songs since then, such as “Diamonds” with Megan Thee Stallion, the 2021 Cardi B collaboration “Wild Side,” and the 2022 song that featured Tinashe, Offset, and Calvin Harris, “New to You.”

Kordei explained that the delays in the album’s release were largely due to “real life.” She noted that her parents were “really, really sick” for a while, and that she had “had a lot of deaths in a very short period of time.”

“Dopamine” was released on June 14, and many fans were hoping that her BET performance would give Normani and her album a big boost.
