In Massachusetts, individuals using fireworks must have a certificate of competency to work legally for professional fireworks displays. It is illegal for residents to use, possess, or sell fireworks of any kind. This includes fireworks purchased legally elsewhere and brought into Massachusetts, sparklers, firecrackers, cherry bombs, and other fireworks. Fines range from $10 to $1,000, and some violations could carry a one-year prison sentence.

There have been more than 500 fires and explosions caused by the use of illegal fireworks in Massachusetts over the past five years, including more than 200 people treated medically for burns and other injuries.
