Woman bites cop, spits on jailer after traffic stop in northwest Indiana

PORTER COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) A Chicago woman is facing multiple criminal charges after allegedly biting an Indiana State Police trooper following a traffic stop initiated after she was observed driving more than 100 mph on I-94 in northwest Indiana.

The traffic stop occurred Saturday after a speeding vehicle came from behind and passed the officer’s patrol car in Porter County, according to a news release from the Indiana State Police.


After stopping the vehicle, the driver, identified as Shelby E. Foster, 22, showed signs of alcohol. She claimed that one of her relatives was a Chicago police officer and demanded that the officer call her. During an ID search, the officer also found two fake Illinois IDs.

Foster was handcuffed, but she managed to remove one of the handcuffs while en route to the Porter County Jail. When the officer tried to put the handcuffs back on, she bit him on the right arm.

After arriving at the Porter County Jail, Foster allegedly spat on a guard during the booking process. She faces the following charges:

  • Assault by Bodily Fluid (2 counts) – Level 6 Felony
  • Intimidation – Level 6 Crime
  • Assault on a public safety officer in the exercise of his duties – Level 6 felony
  • Resistance to Law Enforcement – Class A Misdemeanor
  • Reckless Driving – Class A Misdemeanor
  • Driving a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person – Class A misdemeanor
  • Disorderly Conduct – Class B Misdemeanor
  • Driving a vehicle while intoxicated – Class C misdemeanor
  • Possession of False Identification Documents – Class C Misdemeanor
