The MLB trade deadline approaches with rumors from the Los Angeles Dodgers of potential targets and scouting trips made this summer. Amid significant seller interest in the Dodgers’ top prospects, Los Angeles has reportedly made one of its first significant trade offers of the summer.

Some of the latest MLB trade rumors have highlighted Luis Robert, Garrett Crochet and Bo Bichette as Dodgers targets in July. Los Angeles has the depth and talent in its production system to acquire an All-Star talent, but there are very few available this summer.

So far, only the Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics, Los Angeles Angels and Miami Marlins have made it clear they will be sellers at the MLB trade deadline. That’s a small group of teams, with other clubs like the Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago Cubs waiting to see how the next few weeks play out.

Los Angeles currently has only a few teams to negotiate with, with the Dodgers’ system closely monitored by a selling club. Obviously, that was enough for the Dodgers to make a trade offer recently.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Dodgers have already made an offer to the White Sox for Crochet. While the details of the offer have not been revealed, the White Sox have rejected the offer and have informed the clubs that they want prospects with “tremendous upside” in exchange for Crochet.

The Dodgers’ trade offer for Hook might have been lower than Chicago wanted for one key reason. Crochet has already far surpassed his previous career high (54.1) in innings pitched at the major league level. It has already been reported that any MLB team acquiring Hook would likely have to cut down on his innings and potentially use him out of the bullpen in October.

Chicago is setting a high asking price with Crochet’s valuation as a front-line starter on the verge of earning his first All-Star selection. However, the team that acquires him likely knows that Crochet can’t be a starting pitcher until October or his innings will have to be limited in some other way.

Fortunately, Chicago is still committed to trading Hook after the two sides failed to agree on terms on a long-term deal. Los Angeles has the farm system to meet the White Sox’s demands, but whether or not the two sides can find common ground and reach a deal will depend on how comfortable the Dodgers are with a plan to limit Hook’s workload.
