Gypsy Rose Blanchard Reveals the Books and Films That Inspired Her

Gypsy Rose Blanchard has continued to gain popularity since his parole in December 2023.

In 2015, Nicolas Godejohn fatally stabbed Clauddine “Dee Dee” BlanchardGypsy reportedly heard the entire incident from the next room. The couple had conspired to end Dee Dee’s life after Gypsy endured years of abuse at their hands.

After spending eight and a half years in prison, Gypsy has continued to tell her story and advocate for Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a mental illness and form of child abuse. Gypsy Rose’s story captivated audiences and the media, sparking a 2017 MAX documentary called “Mommy Dead and Dearest” and a Hulu series called “The Act.”

For those unaware, Dee Dee Blanchard was tragically found stabbed to death in her Springfield, Missouri home in 2015. Gypsy Rose and Gypsy’s then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, became suspects after police recovered incriminating text messages detailing the murder plot.

In 2016, Gypsy Rose went on trial in connection with her mother’s death. It was revealed that Gypsy had never been as sick as Dee Dee claimed: her mother had fabricated her medical records and misled everyone into believing she was seriously ill. Dee Dee went so far as to persuade doctors to give her unnecessary treatments and surgeries.

As Dee Dee took Gypsy to countless doctors, she knew exactly how to persuade them to prescribe all sorts of medications, probably because she worked as a nurse’s aide.

“I was in the dark like everybody else,” Gypsy admitted. “The only thing I knew was I could walk. For everything else, the leukemia, the epilepsy, I was on drugs that (Dee Dee) said were cancer drugs.”

And it didn’t stop there. In addition to the so-called cancer treatments, Dee Dee got doctors to give her painkillers like Vicodin. “No one knows I was an addict before prison, let alone in prison,” the former inmate revealed in her Lifetime docuseries, “The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard.”

“The doctors prescribed me painkillers after the surgery,” she said in the documentary series. “But when the painkillers wore off, I was still in pain, and my mom had a prescription for Vicodin.”

“So when she wasn’t looking, I would go and get one or two from her bottle. I didn’t really know what addiction was. I just knew it was a craving, that was all I could think about. I wanted another one,” the former inmate added.

“The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard” is now streaming on Lifetime.
