Hawks’ Larry Nance Sends Heartfelt Message After Trade From Pelicans

The trade between the Atlanta Hawks and New Orleans Pelicans has yet to be finalized. New Orleans has yet to meet salary requirements, and ESPN’s Bobby Marks expects another player to be added to the deal.

However, one of the players in the existing structure – big man Larry Nance – has already said his goodbyes.

“Pels fans, I’ve seen all of your messages and they mean more to me than you know!” Nance posted on X on July 1. “I’ve invested a lot of myself into the community and you’ve always been so kind and supportive! New Orleans will always be a place I remember fondly!” THANKS all, for so many things.

Nance, 31, is in the final year of a two-year, $21.6 million contract.

He’s getting a reasonable $11 million salary in 2024-25 and has shown himself capable of playing both big-time and occasional winger roles, even if it’s been a few seasons since he last did so.

However, his role with the Hawks in their current setup is unclear. Clint Capela has been cited in trade speculation but remains with the team.

Onyeka Okongwu is already waiting in the wings with Capela in place.

He has and can replace Jalen Johnson at the 4. Nance makes more sense if the Hawks can eventually find a buyer for Capela, who is in the final year of a two-year, $46 million contract. The indefinite nature of the deal will also impact Murray’s bonus.

This could limit any further meaningful activity without a corresponding measure to pay salaries and avoid paying taxes. It is rare for a team to be a serious threat without being subject to the luxury tax.

However, the Hawks avoided the tax for years and took action accordingly.

It remains to be seen what impact this will have on the rest of their current core. In addition to Capela, De’Andre Hunter has been a prominent figure in trade speculation.

With Hawks first-round pick Zaccharie Risacher in Hunter’s fold, Hunter’s time could be running out as he enters the second year of a four-year, $90 million contract. Even with what the Hawks have already done, there’s still plenty of intrigue surrounding them this offseason.
