Reading time: 07 minutes

Synopsis

Lakhs of candidates who appeared for the NEET-UG exam have worked hard to prepare for the exam and are deeply disturbed and shocked after hearing updates about the apprehensions regarding cancellation of NEET-UG 2024 exam, the plea said.

A petition has been filed before the Supreme Court of India under Article 32 of the Constitution seeking a direction to the National Testing Agency (NTA) not to pass any order amounting to cancellation of the NEET-UG 2024 examination.

Further, a re-evaluation of OMR sheets of all candidates has been called for to ensure transparency in the examination process and address concerns over allegations of tampering, rank inflation and skyrocketing number of toppers in NEET-UG 2024.

Arguing that cancellation of a national level examination only due to concerns raised by a few people would amount to grave injustice to several candidates who worked hard for the examination, the petitioners submitted: “The alleged cancellation of the examination at this stage will have serious repercussions on the candidates who have worked hard for the examination. The applicants propose to suggest that in view of the inflation of the ranks this year, which is clearly evident from the table below, it is advisable to conduct a re-evaluation of the marks rather than a renewal for all the candidates…”.

It is also stated that hundreds of thousands of candidates have worked hard to prepare for the examination and any alleged act such as cancellation would seriously harm the careers of thousands of deserving candidates across the country and benefit a few of those who are praying for the cancellation of the examination.

The petitioners are represented by Advocate Tanvi Dubey.

While dealing with a petition filed by Shivangi Mishra and others regarding the alleged leak of the NEET UG paper, a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Ahsanuddin Amanullah also issued an opinion to the National Testing Agency (NTA) pending his response, saying that “the sanctity of the examination appears to have been affected.”

Another petition was filed with the Supreme Court seeking a new NEET examwhich was held on May 5, 2024 for admission to medical schools across the country, amid an alleged leak of documents and other malpractices.
