New York Mets star Brandon Nimmo was rushed to hospital after collapsing in his Washington DC area hotel room.

Nimmo spoke to the media before Monday’s road game against the Washington Nationals with an unavoidable bandage on his forehead, admitting he cut his head while passing out.

Nimmo, the Mets’ regular left fielder, is out of the lineup Monday but hopes to return Tuesday against New York’s National League East rival.

“I didn’t sleep, I didn’t eat at all,” Nimmo said of his collapse. “We’re going to try to make sure it doesn’t snowball. I don’t want to have any soft tissue injuries today because I wasn’t prepared for today.”

“We’re going to try to be as ready as possible for tomorrow,” Nimmo continued.

Nimmo was officially designated “day to day” by the team, meaning he could return Tuesday.

The 31-year-old veteran is having a strong season amid the Mets’ Grimace-inspired midseason surge in the standings.

While Pete Alonso or Starling Marte are likely to be the team’s representative at the All-Star Game, Nimmo leads New York with 50 RBIs and nine home runs.

Nimmo spent his entire MLB career with the Mets organization after being drafted by the team in 2011 and working his way up the ranks until making his major league debut in 2016.

The Mets are still 13.5 games behind the Phillies for first place in the NL East, but just two games behind the Cardinals for the second wild-card spot.

Getting Nimmo back in the lineup sooner rather than later could help New York keep playoff hopes alive longer in the season.
