Mets’ Brandon Nimmo hospitalized after hotel room accident

The New York Mets are slowly climbing back up the National League East standings. New York has won six of its last 10 games and sits in third place in the division standings. However, the Mets received a concerning update regarding left fielder Brandon Nimmo’s injury following a hotel room accident prior to their series against the Washington Nationals.

Nimmo reportedly slipped in his room Sunday night and cut his head. He was hospitalized until Monday afternoon but fortunately does not have a concussion, according to Tim Healy. Hopefully, Brandon Nimmo does not suffer any lingering injury issues from the incident. The 31-year-old was a big part of the Mets’ midseason comeback.

In 77 games, Nimmo has posted a .247 batting average and hit 13 home runs. Additionally, his 50 RBIs and .815 OPS rank 22nd and 33rd in the league, respectively. Nimmo has been a great complement alongside Pete Alonso and Starling Marte.

Alonso leads the team with 17 home runs, while Marte leads the way with a .278 batting average. New York’s offense has done a good job of keeping them competitive in late June. Before their series against the Astros, the Mets won back-to-back games against the New York Yankees on June 25-26. They then lost two of three games to Houston, but they’ll be hoping to start July off strong against the Nationals.

New York is trying to get back into the playoff race, but the caliber of competition they face will make it difficult. Can the Mets keep their momentum going as they approach the midway point of the 2024 season?

New York has been heavily discussed in the MLB trade deadline rumor mill. Pete Alonso has been the most talked about name. Alonso entered the 2024 season with the intention of helping the Mets contend for a playoff spot. But after his team got off to a cold start, fans and analysts suspected he might be traded.

Ironically, the cross-town rival Yankees are reportedly interested in Alonso. New York would get a promotion to the starting position, but one concern is how Alonso would fit in long-term given the Yankees’ high salaries.

Another team that is reportedly interested in Alonso is the Chicago Cubs. Like the Mets, Chicago was hoping for a better showing in 2024. They hired one of the best managers in baseball (Craig Counsell) and made moves to bolster their roster. However, 85 games into the season, the Cubs are last in the NL Central standings. Could Alonso be the answer they are looking for?

While it would be tempting for the Mets to part ways with the 29-year-old, keeping him could be beneficial. If New York can keep its foot on the gas in July and continue to climb the division, Alonso could be huge for them down the stretch.

The Mets will look to stay strong against the Nationals on Monday night despite Brandon Nimmo’s injury. Can New York continue to win and rekindle fans’ hopes of a playoff appearance in Queens?
