Cristiano Ronaldo has posted a seven-word update on social media after an eventful night at Euro 2024 which saw Portugal progress to the quarter-finals after beating Slovenia on penalties.

The 39-year-old is yet to score a single goal in the European Championship, but it is not for lack of trying, as he has made several attempts to break the deadlock.

Ronaldo was repeatedly pushed back by Slovenian goalkeeper Jan Oblak and ended up in tears when his extra-time penalty was saved.

The Portugal captain wasted a golden opportunity to take the lead in the last 16 during extra time but saw his penalty saved agonisingly by the Atletico Madrid stop-shoot.

A tearful episode immediately followed, with Manchester United full-back Diogo Dalot among the Portuguese players trying to comfort Ronaldo.

Ronaldo missed a penalty in extra time before scoring from the spot in the penalty shootout.

Fifteen goalless minutes meant the match would go to penalties and gave Ronaldo the opportunity to atone for his earlier mistake.

He made no mistake on his second visit to the penalty spot and sent his shot into the bottom corner, past a stretching Oblak who failed to make a save in the penalty shootout.

A low-key celebration saw Ronaldo emerge and then apologise to the Portuguese fans who had gathered inside the Frankfurt Arena.

However, Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa won most of the plaudits after saving three consecutive Slovenia penalties to record a tournament-winning victory for the nation.

After the match, Ronaldo posted a short update on social media, in which he translated his message from his native language: “Inexplicable moments. Let’s give it everything we’ve got! Thank you.”

A series of photos were also shared by the legendary player who will now prepare for a quarter-final clash against France in a repeat of the 2016 final.

Fans were quick to show their support for the former Real Madrid, Manchester United and Juventus star, with one reply adding: “You are the best!!! All humans make mistakes, we will never forget what you did for all the Portuguese. Raise your head and come to France.”
