Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo suffers serious medical emergency, scratched from lineup vs. Nats

On Monday, the Mets were rocked by a surprising medical emergency for outfielder Brandon Nimmo.

What started as stomach pains has turned into a major question mark for the otherwise healthy Nimmo. Early Monday morning, Nimmo suddenly collapsed in his Washington, D.C. hotel room, suffering from a gash on his forehead. He has been in better spirits since then, but will not be available to play against the Nats.

Mets captain Carlos Mendoza gave reporters an update on the situation Monday afternoon. Nimmo also spoke to the media, unable to explain what led to his collapse.

“I think we got lucky,” Mendoza said. The manager added that Nimmo was evaluated for a concussion, which came back negative.

Nimmo told reporters he underwent a CT scan and additional tests but was unable to identify the catalyst. It was an unfortunate injury for Nimmo on Monday, which marked the eighth anniversary of his first MLB home run.

Nimmo explicitly mentioned that he had not been drinking alcohol before he passed out. He played in Sunday’s 10-5 loss to the Houston Astros, which required extra innings. He went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Addressing the medical scare with some levity, Nimmo joked that it made him look like Harry Potter.

It’s been a tough 24 hours for the New York Mets, who are coming back down to earth (a little) after their big June, fueled by Grimace.

The team hopes Nimmo will be back soon to resume his game in top form. The Mets went 16-8 in June, unwittingly igniting a sensation around a preternatural winning streak led by Grimace.

Grimace, the purple McDonald’s character, changed the game for the Mets after throwing out the first pitch on June 12. After that pitch, the Mets went on to win seven straight and welcomed a small new wave of Mets fans who cheered the team for its connection to the purple cartoon character.

The Mets and general manager David Stearns are preparing for a crucial MLB trade deadline at which the Mets could be serious buyers or sellers. New York remains on the edge of the National League wild-card race, two games behind.

Nimmo is hitting .291/.376/.521 with an OPS of .897.
