New York Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo was absent from Monday night’s game against the Washington Nationals because of a morning collapse in which he cut his head.

The incident happened shortly after 5 a.m. in Nimmo’s hotel room.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Nimmo did not have a concussion. The 31-year-old underwent tests including a CT scan and an electrocardiogram.

“He took all the tests this morning,” Mendoza told reporters before Monday’s game. “He wanted to make sure we didn’t miss anything. Luckily, everything came back negative, so I think we got lucky.”

Nimmo, who had a bandage on his forehead, told reporters he woke up around 5:15 a.m. and felt unwell. He said he went to the bathroom and had cramps before passing out. Nimmo said when he came to, his forehead was bleeding and he didn’t know why.

Nimmo said he called Mets trainer Joe Golia, who came to the room to check on him and then took him to the hospital.

“I’ve never fainted,” Nimmo said. “There’s never been a moment in my life that I couldn’t recover. It’s a strange feeling.”

Doctors told Nimmo he may have suffered a temporary loss of blood flow to his brain due to a muscle cramp that likely caused his heart rate to increase. Anxiety about not feeling well could also have played a role.

“It could happen once in your life and you’ll never have to deal with it again,” Nimmo said. “I asked them if there was anything they could do to prevent it from happening again. They said no. Sometimes a perfect storm happens. What I understood is that when your blood pressure drops, your brain loses blood for a second. And you’re out of commission.”

“I probably wasn’t out very long. But long enough to fall and do some damage.”

Nimmo is hitting .247 with 13 homers and a team-high 50 RBIs in 77 games. On Sunday, he hit his 100th career homer while going 3-for-4 with a walk, three RBIs and two runs in a 10-5, 11-inning loss to the Houston Astros.

Jeff McNeil started in left field on Monday.
