Sands China’s free kits help community prepare for emergencies and natural disasters

The Sands China initiative aims to raise community awareness and strengthen precautionary measures before natural disasters and during emergencies. This is the sixth consecutive year that Sands China has worked with the Macao Red Cross on the programme, which has so far benefited 5,900 households.

This year’s initiative included packaging and distribution of the kits, disaster prevention workshops and a social media campaign.

Sands China Ltd. Executive Vice President Dr. Wilfred Wong said: “We are very pleased to have successfully completed the sixth consecutive year of this important initiative to help Macau residents have the information and tools they need to effectively respond to emergencies and natural disasters. Through initiatives like this, we continue our commitment to community well-being and safety.”

Emergency Response Kits

Sands Cares ambassadors helped assemble 1,500 emergency response kits at the Macao Red Cross headquarters on 5 and 6 June. The kits were customised to help the community better prepare for emergencies, with items for disaster preparedness, emergency evacuation and personal health and safety. The contents of the kit were designed by the Macao Red Cross based on its experience in disaster preparedness and relief, with the items sourced locally and donated by Sands China.

Disaster Prevention Workshops

Sands Cares Ambassadors participated in two disaster prevention workshops organized by the Macau Red Cross on June 20 and 27 for local primary school students from Escola Lin Fong Pou Chai and Escola Santa Maria Mazzarello.

Conducted in an interactive format involving games and puppets, the workshops were attended by 100 students and teachers and covered topics such as previous disasters in Macao and lessons learned, disaster prevention at home, emergency shelters, sources of accurate information, support for relief during and after disasters, and an introduction to the Sands Cares Emergency Response Kits that Sands Cares Ambassadors gave to each participating family.

Owen Wong, Deputy Director of Disaster Relief Affairs of the Macao Red Cross, said: “In order to improve the knowledge and skills of Macao citizens to respond to large-scale emergencies and natural disasters, and at the same time improve the ability of vulnerable communities to respond to community risk incidents, the Macao Red Cross Community Disaster Preparedness Service actively promotes the importance of disaster preparedness to the public.”

Social Media Campaign

Sands China conducted a social media campaign from June 12 to 18, titled “Sands Cares Presents: What You Need to Know About Disaster Preparedness,” to help spread knowledge about the importance of being prepared for natural disasters.

Sands China’s community initiatives and the company’s Sands Cares Ambassador program are part Sands’ worriesthe global corporate citizenship program of parent company Las Vegas Sands Corp.
