Silent Fallout: Groundbreaking Cinematic Tour Reveals Secrets of Nuclear Testing

Join director Hideaki Ito from Seattle to New York as he reveals true stories, starting July 11

Silent Fallout is proud to announce the North American screening tour of “Silent Fallout,” an award-winning film by Japanese director Hideaki Ito. This profound and moving film has already received international recognition, winning Best Direction at the Sweden International Film Festival, Best Editing at the Maverick Film Awards (UK), and Best Story at the Toronto Feature and Short Documentary Festival (Canada), among other prestigious accolades.

“Silent Fallout” (trailer here) delves into the untold stories of victims of America’s nuclear testing. In 1951, the United States began testing nuclear weapons on the continent, exposing countless citizens to dangerous levels of radiation. Growing up in suburban Utah in the 1950s and ’60s, Mary Dickson watched as her classmates succumbed to unusual illnesses and deaths. Meanwhile, St. Louis-based Dr. Louise Reiss conducted a groundbreaking study by collecting baby teeth, revealing widespread exposure across America.

The film follows these harrowing stories and others from Salt Lake City to Virginia, Missouri, the United Kingdom and Japan to uncover and expose the complex and disturbing truths behind the bomb. The Silent Fallout trailer provides a glimpse into this powerful narrative, showcasing the tireless efforts of individuals who risked everything to bring these stories to light.

The North American screening tour of “Silent Fallout” will run from July 11 to August 21, with additional dates and locations to be added soon. The current schedule includes:

  • July 13: Springdale, Arkansas
  • July 16: Washington, DC
  • July 17: Baltimore, Maryland
  • July 19: West Chester, NY
  • July 20: New York City, NY
  • July 21: Ocean City, New Jersey
  • July 24: Boston, MA
  • August 6, 9, and 11: San Francisco, California
  • August 17: Seattle, Washington

More than just a film, “Silent Fallout” aims to raise awareness about the serious problem of radiation poisoning and nuclear contamination in the United States and around the world. Director Hideaki Ito’s passion for justice is evident in his poignant statement: “I feel a great deal of anger. A government that has exposed its own citizens to radiation and acquired nuclear weapons. The perpetrators remain silent. Why must the victims lose their voice? And must the people remain ignorant? Should we just be spectators? Who are nuclear weapons for? I believe my role is to take the first step and bring people to the table.”

Narrated by Alec Baldwin, “Silent Fallout” is a must-see film for anyone interested in exploring the darkest chapters of history and their lingering effects today. The film invites audiences to look beyond recent popular interpretations, such as the blockbuster film “Oppenheimer,” and consider the real and ongoing impacts of nuclear testing on communities around the world.

“Silent Fallout” is not only a call to action, but an invitation to a crucial conversation about our past, present and future. Those interested in attending a screening can visit the Silent Fallout website for a full list of North American tour dates and locations.
