Mets Player Brandon Nimmo Breaks Silence on Scary Hotel Fainting Incident

Mets Player Brandon Nimmo Breaks Silence on Scary Hotel Fainting Incident

Brandon Nimmo sat out a New York Mets game for just the fourth time this season on Monday, as he was unavailable following a bizarre incident earlier in the morning. Nimmo woke up in his hotel room just outside Washington, D.C., early Monday morning and passed out in the bathroom shortly after, feeling crampy and nauseous.

After a hospital stay and several tests, Nimmo was released Monday afternoon and appears to have avoided any serious problems. He did not suffer a concussion and is expected to be available for the Mets on Tuesday.

“I’ve never blacked out,” he said, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. “There’s never been a moment in my life that I couldn’t recover. It’s a weird feeling.”

The Mets are certainly relieved to have avoided a bullet with their starting left fielder after he was a smash hit in June. Nimmo finished the month with an OPS over 1.000 in 23 games. He had a .315 batting average with 13 extra-base hits, 21 RBIs and 24 runs scored. He is one of 10 players in baseball to score 50 runs and 50 RBIs this season.

Brandon Nimmo doesn’t remember everything about the incident but is happy to have escaped unharmed, except for a cut on his forehead.

“This could happen once in your life and you’ll never have to deal with it again,” Nimmo said. “I asked them if there was anything I could do to prevent it from happening again.” And they said, “No.” Sometimes a perfect storm happens. What I realized is that … when your blood pressure drops, your brain just loses blood for a second. And you’re out of commission.”

“I probably wasn’t out very long, but long enough to fall and do some damage.”

Mets stay in form with extra-inning win to start July

Few teams have been better than the Mets in June, and they’re looking to continue that momentum in July as New York plays its best baseball of the year. After a 16-8 month, the Mets opened July with a thrilling series opener against the Washington Nationals.

Each Mets starter had a hit and New York got back to .500 with a 9-7 victory in 10 innings. The Mets exploded for six runs in extra time on home runs by J.D. Martinez and a red-hot Jose Iglesias, with an RBI triple by Francisco Alvarez in between.

The Nats didn’t give up and scored the tying run in the bottom of the 10th inning. The Mets held on to open July with a win, their first victory in the first month of 2024.

The Mets enter the second half of the season with a 41-41 record. While it will take many miracles for New York to catch the Philadelphia Phillies for the NL East crown, the Mets are in the thick of the National League Wild Card race.

Although still on the fringes of the competition, the Mets are a game and a half out of a playoff spot. The St. Louis Cardinals currently occupy the final wild card spot in the National League, having won seven of their last ten games.

The Mets’ schedule over the next three weeks gives the team an opportunity to vault into one of those wild-card spots. The Mets won’t play a team currently in a strong position until they meet the Yankees on July 23. They’ll finish the unofficial first half of the season against the Colorado Rockies before exiting the All-Star break with a four-game series in Miami and against the struggling Marlins.
