Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said Democratic governors would meet Wednesday to discuss Biden’s concerns after tough debates

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Democratic governors from across the country will meet at the White House today, following President Joe Biden’s disappointing debate last week and what it means for the 2024 election and the races down the ballot.

Walz, chairman of the Democratic Governors Association, said a routine conversation Monday among governors turned to “what was clearly a poor performance in last Thursday’s debate.”

He said governors were asking for a plan and a message.

“Especially with the Supreme Court decision yesterday,” Walz said Tuesday after a briefing on the ongoing flooding in the state. “The threat seems very real of a change in the way our country runs its affairs, more toward a supreme executive branch and unlimited power, as opposed to a federalist system where state governors have a lot of say in how things are done.”

Walz said he still believes Biden should be the party’s nominee and that he can beat former President Donald Trump, but other Democrats question that thinking.

Today’s meeting will allow governors to talk about “some of the concerns that we’ve talked about,” Walz said, adding that he also encountered challenges during the discussions, but “how does that impact the way the country operates?”

“How will this impact the election?” he continued. “It’s about the differences and the binary choice that we’re going to face in November, and how important that is.”
