A Good Girl's Guide to Murder Episode 4 Recap: A Shocking Secret Is Uncovered

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder is a teen drama series based on Holly Jackson’s bestselling suspense thrillers. The series follows Pip Fitz-Amobi, who is determined to solve the murder of a local schoolgirl after becoming convinced that the police have assigned the case to the wrong person.

In episode four, Pip begins to wonder if her investigation into Andie Bell’s disappearance has been for nothing, but just when she thinks she’s wasted her time, a huge secret is revealed that changes everything.

The episode opens with Ravi and Pip opening Andie’s stuffed rabbit after parking in a field and it is filled with drugs. They also find a client list written in Andie’s handwriting, which is on a piece of paper and appears to be coded. Pip rushes to school, having already skipped three classes, something she has never done before, and is almost late for her Cambridge entrance interview. The interview goes well but her mind is still on the case and not trying to impress the woman interviewing her.

Later, while helping her friends organize a reunion for the class of 2019, Pip scribbles on the piece of paper she found in Andie’s rabbit and realizes that it has the name of a local hotel engraved on it. She calls Ravi and goes against her mother’s wishes and tracks him down to go to the hotel and see if Andie has ever stayed there.

The hotel is posh and the man at the front desk is rude. So Ravi sets off the fire alarm when no one is looking and, with all the guests and staff evacuated, Pip goes behind the front desk to steal an old guest book.

The couple hides in a hotel room as the chaos continues and they realize that the bathroom floor is mosaic, like the one in the background of the photo of Andie in her underwear that Max has in his room, confirming that Andie has been in that hotel.

Later, they look through the guestbook and realize that Andie and her “secret older man” had checked into the hotel under false names, but Pip is shaken when she sees her father, Victor’s name is also in the guestbook.

The next morning, Pip asks her mother about the time her father went to Nigeria to see their grandmother and asks her why they didn’t all go. Her mother says that they thought the flight was too long for two young children at the time, but Pip knows she is lying.

As Pip is heading to school, Dan Da Silva corners her and tries to get her into his police car. She refuses until he reveals that he knows she broke into the Bell house and that she has no choice but to go with him.

He takes her back to the Bells’ and they sit down to watch the father, Jason Bell, wash his car. Dan talks about how he and his sister, Nat, raised each other and had a difficult childhood, but Jason was like a mentor to Dan and encouraged him to get a job on the police force. He makes Pip feel guilty about investigating Andie’s case by saying that her parents are good people and are still grieving. He then shows her a video of Sal being questioned by the police and getting angry when no one listens to his answers… he throws a chair across the interrogation room and Pip is shocked to see this new side of Sal.

Back home, Pip asks her mother about Victor’s return to Nigeria and tells her that she knows he didn’t go because his name was in the hotel guestbook. Her mother admits that he moved away for a while because they went through a rough patch and she thought he cheated, which he didn’t. Pip gives a speech about how no one can be trusted (because she is now convinced that Sal is guilty after watching the video in anger) and storms off.

Pip meets Ravi at the lake and she tells him about the video and also her flashbacks when she told Sal where Andie was hiding at school. He is angry because he trusted her, but now even she thinks Sal is guilty and he leaves, their friendship over.

Upset by Ravi and also confused about everything that happened in her investigation, Pip rushes home and nearly has an accident. In the end, she stops in a field and cries. Once she pulls herself together, she goes to Cara’s house, where her friend gives her advice and they distract her by helping Naomi get ready for the high school reunion.

As Cara goes to get some hair straighteners, Naomi asks about the case and Pip says she thinks Sal might be guilty now. A cloud passes over Naomi’s face and she tells her to look at her laptop, gives her the password and tells her to look at a secret Instagram account. Pip does this in secret in Naomi’s room and is shocked to find a picture on the account of Max, Naomi and their friend taken the night Sal was supposed to have killed Andie… the picture is taken at 12:06, and someone must have taken the picture… which means Sal didn’t leave the party at 10:30 like all her friends told the police.

Pip rushes to the meeting to confront Naomi, but Max and Andie’s sister Becca see them heading to a classroom to talk. Once inside, Naomi struggles to accept what really happened, but confirms that Pip’s suspicions that they all lied to the police about when Sal left the party are correct. When Pip asks why she lied, she tells him, “We had to lie because they found out what we did…” But what did Naomi and her friends do? And what does it have to do with Andie’s disappearance?

All episodes of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder are now available on BBC iPlayer in the UK and US, with the series being released as a box set on Netflix on Thursday 1st August.
