Billy Gunn reveals when he would consider retiring

WWE Hall of Famer Billy Gunn has recently seen a resurgence in his career thanks to his partnership with The Acclaimed. However, he is getting older and has now revealed when he would consider retiring.

In July 2023, Billy Gunn appeared to have retired from wrestling after leaving his boots in the ring during an episode of Collision. However, this retirement was short-lived as he reunited with The Acclaimed at All In, defeating The House of Black to become the new Trios Champions.

At 60 years old, Gunn continues to compete regularly in AEW and shows no signs of slowing down. While he knows his career won’t last forever, he remains focused on the present. Speaking to Chris Van Vliet, Gunn expressed uncertainty about when he will retire, but stressed the fact that he still brings value to the company and fans, as evidenced by their reactions.

Gunn mentioned that he still feels good overall, despite having some physical issues like stress fractures in his back. These issues don’t significantly hinder his performances. While he acknowledges that he can’t compete at the same level as younger wrestlers like Will Ospreay, he believes his presence and the crowd’s reaction to him demonstrates his continued value to AEW.

“I wish I knew, I don’t feel too bad. But a lot of it has to do with how I take care of myself. I mean, yeah, do I get up and everything until I get moving? Yeah. I just found out I have two stress fractures in my back, but they don’t stop me from doing what I do, they don’t hinder me, I can still do what I do at a pretty good level.

I’m not going to go out there and spend 25 minutes with Will (Ospreay), that’s not going to happen. But do I still have a stake in the company? Can I still contribute something? Of course I can, because the minute I step out there, these people go crazy and start saying my name.

Gunn also said he would consider retiring if the public ever disapproved of his presence. He added that he had cut back on his travels in big bumps after a conversation with his sons about a place he had previously played.

“As long as I’m providing value and I’m not, you know, if I walk out and they’re like, ‘Oh my God, really?’ The first time I hear that, I’m quitting. But as long as I can do something to help The Acclaimed or help the company or help my kids. Yeah, I’ll stay. There’s no reason why I shouldn’t. I have no problem just being the sidekick to The Acclaimed. I love it. Because I get to run around, talk to people, be goofy, interact whenever I want, and work every once in a while. When I’m working, it’s not crazy.”

My kids were like, ‘Did you just take a triple powerbomb?’ ‘What were you thinking?’ ‘I was like, ‘I thought that would help the game.’ ‘Okay, don’t ever do that again.’ ‘I said, ‘Okay.’ ‘Well, I thought that would help.’ ‘But as long as I can do it and I feel good about it and it’s not a problem. The only thing I have a problem with is flying these days. Because I hate it.’ ‘Yeah, but I mean, as long as I’m still here and I’m still having fun and I’m doing what I’m doing and I can do something to help (then) I’m in, I’m good.’

The Acclaimed group with Billy Gunn is still one of the pillars of AEW today, even if some disagree with that idea. Regardless, we’ll have to see when Gunn retires for good.
