Novak Djokovic sends classy message to Andy Murray after Wimbledon win

Novak Djokovic is keen to see Andy Murray attempt to return to Wimbledon singles action next year after the British sporting icon withdrew from his scheduled match against Tomas Machac.

The Serb opened Wimbledon with a hugely comfortable win over the Czech qualifier in a match that lasted just two hours.

There were initially some questions about Djokovic’s fitness after undergoing knee surgery just three weeks ago.

But he dispelled those doubts with a solid performance on Centre Court and progressed to the second round.

Murray was originally scheduled to play after Djokovic on Wimbledon’s biggest stage, but withdrew from the singles because he did not feel confident enough to compete with Tomas Machac.

The former world number one underwent back surgery last week and is battling to return to full fitness at SW19.

Djokovic used his post-match interview on court to deliver a classy message to his former rival, even if he struggled to identify himself.

“I’ve been fortunate to compare myself to other 37-year-olds in our sport or in other sports to be able to play at the highest level for so many years,” he said.

“I think Nick Kyrgios is in the commentary booth here, he’s had a lot of injuries, so talking about serious injuries, he’s had quite a few.

“I was very lucky not to be away from tennis for so long.

“As an athlete, I support Nick and anyone who has had a hard time. It’s tough. Sometimes you feel almost helpless because something is stopping you from getting back to what you love most.

“There have been many examples, like Andy Murray’s withdrawal, which is a big blow to the tournament.

“It’s a real shame, I have all my respect for everything he has done in this tournament and in this sport (applause).

“I just hope he can finish his career the way he wants.

“I heard he’s going to play doubles, I hope he’ll try again next year in singles.

“I wish him and all those who suffer from injuries the best. It’s hard for me to talk about serious injuries. I came back after three and a half weeks of surgery, but I think it’s helpful to recognize all those athletes who suffer.”

Murray confirmed he will still play in the men’s doubles draw, where he will join his brother Jamie.

The draw is set to begin on Thursday and the Murray brothers will face Australian duo Rinky Hijikata and John Peers.
