Crisis mood among Democrats

US Election Campaign – After Biden’s TV Gaffe: Crisis Atmosphere Among Democrats

After Joe Biden’s televised gaffe caused an uproar among US Democrats, Lloyd Doggett, the top Democratic congressman, publicly called for room for an alternative candidate.

“Unlike Trump, Biden has always been dedicated to our country and not just to himself,” the Texas politician told US media. “I hope he makes the painful and difficult decision to step down.”

Nancy Pelosi, the former Speaker of the House, praised Biden’s “judgment and strategic thinking” on MSNBC. But she acknowledged that it was legitimate to question whether his gaffe was “just an episode or a condition.” Pelosi stressed that both candidates should be subjected to rigorous scrutiny regarding their fitness for the presidency.

CBS reported that Biden would meet with Democratic governors from several states on Wednesday to seek their support. Earlier, CNN reported, citing sources familiar with the matter, that several governors had reached out earlier this week to propose such a meeting.

According to a report in the Washington Post, Senator Joe Manchin threatened to publicly break with Biden after the televised debate. Manchin, known as a swing voter, recently joined the Democrats but continues to align with his former party as an independent senator.

The newspaper said Manchin changed his mind in the face of pressure from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. The newspaper quoted an unnamed Democratic official as saying, “Nobody wants to be the first to stab Julius Caesar.”

Democrats have publicly called for personnel changes in recent days, but the party’s most prominent figures have so far refrained from harsh criticism.
