‘Pretty shocking’ – Lewis Hamilton criticises his own Austrian GP performance despite 4th place

“Lewis, it’s all to play for, it’s all to play for!” exclaimed Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff on the radio after the penalty, as he tried to catch his driver in the race. However, even though Hamilton finished in P4, he was disappointed with his own performance this weekend.

“It’s quite shocking but really happy for the team,” he told Sky Sports F1 when asked to sum up the day. “Everyone at the factory has worked really hard this year to get a result like this. So congratulations to the team and George, it’s well deserved.”

Asked what he meant by “pretty shocking”, the Briton added: “That’s just me. I’ve been pretty crap all weekend. It’s not for lack of trying, but I’m generally slow and that’s just not acceptable.”

Hamilton also revealed his race was hampered after suffering damage to his W15 following a first-lap attack on the man he will replace at Ferrari next year, Sainz.
