Passengers were affected by major disruption across London on the Underground, Overground and services to Heathrow Airport.

All trains between Heathrow and central London have been suspended for “tunnel safety reasons”, National Rail has warned.

Holidaymakers travelling on the Elizabeth Line and Heathrow Express are being affected by severe disruption to and from the airport.

National Rail said: “The Heathrow Tunnel is closed for safety reasons, meaning trains cannot run to and from Heathrow Airport.

“Trains will be cancelled or modified accordingly.”

Elizabeth Line trains between Abbey Wood and Heathrow Terminals 4 and 5 are unable to run.

The Heathrow Express between London Paddington and Heathrow Terminal 5 is also suspended.

Major disruptions are expected until at least 1:30 p.m., and trains will be cancelled or changed, it said.

National Rail said the safety issue was due to a “problem with the ventilation system in the Heathrow tunnels”, meaning trains cannot run until “Network Rail has resolved this issue”.

The London Underground Piccadilly line still operates to and from the airport.

Trains between Gatwick Airport and East Croydon are also experiencing delays of up to 15 minutes today.

This was due to a “number of incidents”, including a broken-down train which blocked northbound lines earlier, National Rail said.

Disruption on London Underground and Overground

Metro passengers were warned this morning of serious delays to their journeys.

Part of the Central line is suspended, with severe delays between Leytonstone in east London and Woodford via Hainault, and between White City and Ealing Broadway and West Ruislip due to a signal failure at Stratford.

There is no service on the Central line between Woodford and Epping while TfL responds to a fire alarm in Debden.

The rest of the line is experiencing “serious delays”, Transport for London said.

A section of the District line is also partially suspended, with no services between Turnham Green and Richmond while Network Rail engineers repair a track fault in Gunnersbury, south-west London.

The track fault is also affecting the London Overground service.

There are currently no services between Richmond and Gunnersbury.

A Network Rail spokesperson said its teams are “actively investigating the issue and working towards the safe resumption of train services”.

“Delays are expected on some flights, so passengers are advised to check the latest travel information for updates. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause,” they said.

The service between South Tottenham and Barking Riverside is suspended due to a signal failure at Walthamstow Queen’s Road, according to TfL’s latest status update.

TfL also warned of “serious delays” on the Northern Line caused by a fire alarm at Clapham Common.

A TfL spokesperson said: “We apologise to Central line, District line and Overground customers for the disruption to their journeys this morning.

“Our engineers are working as quickly as possible to restore normal service.”
